Root canal treatment which is done for a tooth with deep cavity or injury to the tooth or cracked
tooth. Earlier times the only option was to extract the tooth but with R.C.T the tooth can be saved by
just removing the pulp which is a thread like structure inside the tooth. The tooth remains intact and
after removal of the pulp and underlying infection, its filled from the root tip & thus saving the tooth.
With newer advances in root canal treatment ,the time required has also lessen and is also quite
convenient .
The treated tooth can last lifetime without giving any more problems.
Our clinic uses the latest techniques that are used for R.C.T and radiographs are also taken for
accuracy of the technique with latest softwares.
R.C.T is done on the tooth when the decay becomes very deep and it touches the pulp of the tooth.
If the decay is limited then normal filling can be done where the affected tooth structure is removed
and cleaned after that suitable filling material is placed so that the infection gets arrested and there
is no further decay of the underlying structures. Filling material is placed such a way that it adapts
and binds to the underlying tooth structure and gives a good seal.
Root canal treatment can be associated with placement of ‘post’ & ‘core’ material also. It generally is
required when the tooth structure is extensively damaged or a part or side of it is missing. In such a
case the root canal preparation and filling is done and later a POST is placed which acts in giving
support to the tooth structure. Post can be metallic or can be fiber optic also. It resembles like a
small thin match stick. It is placed inside the canal and sealed after that CORE is placed over the
post which is like filling material gives structure to the tooth structure which went missing due to
decay. Now when post and core materials r placed it is mandatory to place a crown over the tooth
which marks the end of root canal treatment.
As the pulp is removed from the tooth during root canal treatment so the tooth becomes brittle in due
course of time. So its mandatory that the tooth is to be covered with a crown once the root canal is
over. Many a time we tend to see cases where patients gets a very good root canal done but misses
to get the crown done and in such a case even in six months period we see that the tooth structure
is breaking off and finally the tooth is extracted. So the whole concept of saving a tooth with root
canal treatment goes to a vain.
Root canal treatment can be done in a single visit also with the latest techniques that’s available its
quite convenient but in many cases where there is underlying infection it is recommended to get
more than one sitting. Along with this treatment antibiotics might be prescribed so as to limit the
infection that is underlying.
